Suggested Additional Goals

We should be thinking about how to eliminate (or at least minimize) the problems caused by people's habit of installing software without checking with (or even telling) anyone, changing shared configuration settings without regard to how this affects anyone else, etc.  We really should (except in those rare cases where there's a *very* good reason to do otherwise) try to keep all of the general-use workstations to a common software configuration which is *exactly* the same on all of them; the special-purpose systems should also have a matching configuration for all software installed on them which is also installed on the common-use systems.  For configuration settings, we probably should have a general-use account on all general-use systems which has a locked-down configuration and create individual accounts for anyone who wants something different (or who needs special access).
